Happy Monday

March 1st, 2010

As of yesterday, extended unemployment benefits expired for as many as 150 to 160 thousand out of work Americans. This is the result of a filibuster by one individual in the Senate, Kentucky Republican Jim Bunning. Bunning's record has the virtue of Conservative Consistency. This could be regarded as admirable were it not for the potentially disastrous consequences of his lone dissent on the issue at hand.

It is reported that in response to push back from Democratic colleagues last week, Bunning replied, "tough ***t."

His larger argument is that the extension has no clear means by which it is being paid. Sadly, he is one the most prideful sponsors of the Medicare drug benefit, which is the largest single unfunded entitlement in U.S. history and that's the view of the Heritage Foundation with whom he has had a more than cozy relationship.
